REE Fellows
The REE Fellows Program offers university students who are interested in entrepreneurship an opportunity to work on interdisciplinary and international teams for three months, followed by a one week immersive trip to Stanford and Silicon Valley, from Oct 16 - 22, 2008, preceding REE USA.
Undergraduate and graduate students of all majors are welcome to apply. Applications are due by June 1, and students will be notified by July 1. Please read the FAQ before applying.
Application Closed
Students will be placed on international teams of 5-6 students each and will begin working together remotely in August. They will meet in person when they arrive at Stanford University in October. Each team will have a faculty mentor for the project. They will also have time while at Stanford to complete the project before giving a formal pitch on their results to a panel of industry experts.
While at Stanford, students will be hosted by the Stanford Technology Ventures Program. They will participate in lectures and workshops, take field trips to local organizations, and meet with entrepreneurs and investors.
The cost for the program is $1,450, including the program, food, accomodations, and meals at Stanford.
The theme for this year's project is FOOD...
Food for Thought.
Food. Basic Sustenance. Indulgent luxury. A three trillion dollar industry. Eight hundred million people going hungry. Fast food. Slow food. Chocolate fudge. Instant noodles. Caviar. Sausage. Peking Duck. Hamburger. A glass of wine. Sushi. Cheese. Borscht. Microwave lasagna. Entertainment. GMO. Biotechnology. A pet or a meal? A pest or a meal? Naked chef. Iron chef. Carnivore. Vegetarian. Factory farming. Organic farming. Avian bird flu. Mad cow disease. Starvation. Diabetes. Obesity. Tasteless. A creative inspiration.
1) What are you looking for in candidates?
We are looking for intelligent, motivated students to participate in this program. Students of all levels (undergraduate, masters, and PhD students) are encouraged to apply. We will select students with diverse backgrounds and put them on international, multidisciplinary teams. We are looking for individuals who are eager to embrace the challenge of working on international teams. We are also looking for candidates with demonstrated academic excellence, leadership skills, and enthusiasm.
2) What should participants expect during the three month project?
We have crafted a set of advance assignments that are designed to be fun, provocative, and educational. They each take about two weeks to complete. Some projects are for individuals and others are for teams. The first two assignments are designed to introduce the participants to one another and to help them learn how to collaborate remotely. The bulk of the assignments can be done individually with input from team members.
3) What should participants expect during the week at Stanford?
The week at Stanford will be very full. It will be the first time that team members get a chance to work together in person after three months of working together remotely. Fellows will participate in a stimulating collection of workshops, lectures, and field trips, in addition to working with teams on the final project. Faculty advisors will be on hand to help with the team project that is due at the end of the week. Teams will present their projects to a panel of experts on the last day of the week.
4) How much time will this take?
We expect that individuals will need to spend between 4-6 hours per week on the projects during the three month period, running from August through October, however time will vary, and there may be peak periods where it is necessary to spend extra time to get your assignment done, especially given the additional temporal, geographic, and cultural challenges you will be facing.
5) Are there scholarships available?
We are not set up to give scholarships. However, last year many of the participating universities provided funds to students who were accepted. Please ask your university administrators if they can provide a scholarship for you. Note, the fee for the program covers all housing and (most) food while you are at Stanford.
